## Where Basil Hayden Is Made

Basil Hayden is one of four expressions in the Small Batch Collection alongside Knob Creek, Booker’s, and Baker’s, and all four are made on the same Clermont campus. [Basil Hayden is distilled on Jim Beam’s continuous column stills and undergoes post-aging charcoal filtration at the campus Filtration Annex](https://glassandnote.com/spirits/basil-haydens-small-batch). Every bottle traces back to this single address.

The brand’s origin story is rooted in family. [Basil Hayden was created in 1992 by sixth-generation master distiller Booker Noe](https://forbes.com/sites/johnkell/2026/09/02/basil-hayden-adds-a-french-twist-to-its-bourbon), who envisioned it as a “light, inviting” Kentucky bourbon, a counterpoint to the bold, high-proof expressions he was already known for. It debuted alongside Knob Creek, Booker’s, and Baker’s as the Small Batch Collection, a release that changed the landscape of American whiskey.

The distillery is the home of Jim Beam, the world’s #1 bourbon, and the place where eight generations of the Beam family have made whiskey since Jacob Beam sold his first barrel in 1795. [The Clermont campus is often called the home of the First Family of Bourbon](https://mediapost.com/publications/article/417016/jim-beam-taps-creator-economy-opens-campus-at-h.html), and that title reflects real family history.

## The Basil Hayden Culinary Tasting Experience

Fans who want a dedicated, food-forward encounter with Basil Hayden can book the **Basil Hayden Culinary Tasting Experience**. It is [one of several bookable classic tours and tastings at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. campus](https://www.suntoryglobalspirits.com/news/james-b-beam-distilling-co-announces-new-visitor-experiences-and-events-calendar). Other options include the Family Reserve Tasting, Beam Made Bourbon Distillery Tour & Tasting, and Meet the Family Tasting.

This guided experience pairs Basil Hayden expressions with small culinary creations from The Kitchen Table chef. Each bite is designed to show how the bourbon’s lighter, high-rye character plays with food.

The Kitchen Table is a full-service restaurant and cocktail bar built in 2022 and named for “the most important place in our family home.” Its signature dish is a sourdough pizza made with the same yeast strain used in the bourbon, baked in a proper Italian pizza oven. That kind of detail makes a meal at Beam feel different from other stops on the trail. The menu changes with the seasons, and the culinary team draws on Kentucky-inspired classics with a Beam twist.

All tasting experiences at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. require guests to be **21 or older with a valid ID**. Book through [beamdistilling.com](https://www.beamdistilling.com/james-b-beam-distillery-tour/book-a-tour?utm_term=basil-hayden-distillery-tour-kentucky&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent#id=beam-made-bourbon-distillery-tour-tasting-clermont) and check current availability, as popular experiences sell out, especially on weekends and during peak travel seasons.

## Basil Hayden On The Beam Made Bourbon Tour

The flagship **Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting** is the right choice for anyone doing just one distillery, and it is where Basil Hayden makes one of the most memorable appearances on the entire Kentucky Bourbon Trail. [The tour runs 75 minutes, is capped at 24 guests, and is priced at $30 plus tax and fees](https://www.beamdistilling.com/james-b-beam-distillery-tour/book-a-tour?utm_term=basil-hayden-distillery-tour-kentucky&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent#id=beam-made-bourbon-distillery-tour-tasting-clermont).

The taste-as-you-go format sets this tour apart. Instead of four quick pours at the end, Beam pours five bourbons at the moments that explain them. Each sip lands with a story attached. Basil Hayden is poured while you fill a barrel, connecting the liquid in your glass to the exact process happening in front of you.

![On the Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting, you can participate in barrel filling and dumping,](https://cdn.aigrowthmarketer.co/1781204036498-f8c16384bf07.jpeg)**On the Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting, you can participate in barrel filling and dumping,**

### What Does The Basil Hayden Experience Include?

- Jim Beam White, poured at Jim Beam’s original Cadillac, the car he used to carry the distillery’s wild yeast strain back and forth every day to keep it safe, a strain that still runs through nearly every Beam bourbon today
- Jim Beam Black, poured at the mill
- Basil Hayden, poured while you fill a barrel
- Knob Creek, poured at the barrel dump
- A rotating “surprise and delight,” often Booker’s
- A choice between two Basil Hayden and two Knob Creek variants
- Hands-on barrel fill and barrel dump
- The chance to bottle your own Knob Creek on the T-Line, rinsing it, running it down the line, and pressing your thumbprint into the wax seal ($59.99, the same as the gift shop price; engraving is $10)
- A guided tasting at the American Outpost to close

Along the way, guests meet “the Hardest Working Still in America.” [The 65-foot legacy column still at the Clermont, Kentucky campus predates Prohibition and has been running since Prohibition ended](https://www.distillerytrail.com/blog/jim-beam-the-worlds-1-bourbon-to-pause-distillation-at-james-b-beam-distilling-co-for-2026-while-investing-in-site-enhancements/), though the distillery plans to pause distillation on it for 2026. The Cadillac story alone is worth the visit. Jim Beam captured his wild yeast strain at his Bardstown home in the early 1930s and carried it with him every day in that car to keep it alive. That same signature strain still ferments in the tanks today.

Once you have chosen your experience, a little planning makes the day smoother. Here is what to know before you go.

## How To Plan Your Basil Hayden Visit

[Book your tour in advance](https://kybourbontrail.com/travel-blogger-tips-for-your-kentucky-bourbon-trail-distillery-visits). Popular times sell out fastest on weekends and during football and Derby seasons, and tours and tastings require a reservation even when the gift shop is open to walk-ins. [Cancellations are frequent, so checking real-time availability on the booking page can help you grab a last-minute spot](https://www.beamdistilling.com/james-b-beam-distillery-tour/book-a-tour?utm_term=basil-hayden-distillery-tour-kentucky&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent#id=beam-made-bourbon-distillery-tour-tasting-clermont).

[Plan on spending two to three hours on the grounds overall for a standard visit](https://thedailywhisky.com/jim-beam-distillery-events-fall-2026). This timing allows for your tour, a stop at the gift shop, and a meal or drink at The Kitchen Table.

All tastings are **21+ with valid ID**. [Guests under 21 may join the tour but cannot enter the tasting room or participate in the tastings](https://jimbeam.com/es-mx/visit-us). They must wait outside with a guardian or, if old enough, on their own during the final 15 minutes.

[Arrive at least 30 minutes early](https://lifeisfortravel.com/usa/kentucky/bourbon-trail). Tours depart promptly, and guests cannot join a tour already in progress. [Closed-toe shoes are recommended on the working production floor](https://lifeisfortravel.com/usa/kentucky/bourbon-trail).

Hours are generally Monday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST ([Sunday opens at 9:30 a.m.](https://jimbeam.com/es-mx/visit-us); Tuesdays are closed in January and February). [The distillery is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day](https://jimbeam.com/es-mx/visit-us). Always check current hours before visiting.

Many visitors like to compare the two main Basil Hayden options before booking. The table below highlights how the experiences differ.

## Where To Stay And What To Pair With Your Visit

Most visitors base themselves in **Louisville** or **Bardstown**. [Louisville offers Whiskey Row, a concentration of more than ten distilleries and tasting rooms within a mile of Main Street](https://kybourbontrail.com/louisville-region-travel-guide), and the [Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center at the Frazier History Museum](https://kybourbontrail.com/louisville-region-travel-guide), where a Bourbon concierge can help you plan your day. Bardstown, the “Bourbon Capital of the World,” clusters a number of heritage distilleries within easy reach and offers a more immersive, small-town Kentucky feel.

Because James B. Beam Distilling Co. sits right off I-65 between the two cities, it works as the natural anchor stop on any Basil Hayden-focused itinerary. You pass it on the way to bourbon country. For itinerary partners that complement a Basil Hayden visit, **Heaven Hill** is a large heritage distillery in the same Bardstown area, and **Maker’s Mark** is a natural, friendly companion stop on a classic Kentucky itinerary. Together they create a full, well-rounded day on the trail. For more ideas, see [Best Bourbon Trail Stops Near Bardstown Itineraries](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/best-bourbon-trail-stops-bardstown/?utm_term=basil-hayden-distillery-tour-kentucky&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent) and [Kentucky Bourbon Trail Hidden Gems: A 3-Day Itinerary](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/kentucky-bourbon-trail-hidden-gems/?utm_term=basil-hayden-distillery-tour-kentucky&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent).

The gift shop, The American Outpost, keeps hard-to-find and distillery-exclusive bottles on the shelf until they are gone. There is no lottery or timed drop system. That selection includes a throwback bottled-in-bond version of Basil Hayden made only for the distillery. If you have been hunting a bottle, this is the place to find it.

[Designate a driver or arrange transportation in advance](https://kybourbontrail.com/travel-blogger-tips-for-your-kentucky-bourbon-trail-distillery-visits). Many tour operators serve the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and will follow a custom itinerary. The [Kentucky Bourbon Trail’s official website lists trusted transportation partners](https://kybourbontrail.com/louisville-region-travel-guide) and a free Trip Builder tool to help you map your route.

The [Kentucky Bourbon Trail welcomed 2.7 million visits in 2024 and again in 2025](https://courier-journal.com/story/life/food/spirits/bourbon/2026/09/03/kentucky-bourbon-sales-fall-tourism-stays-strong/90097793007). Demand is real, and the best times fill up fast.

## Conclusion: Come As Friends, Leave As Family

Basil Hayden does not have a standalone distillery, and that works in visitors’ favor. The bourbon is made at one of the most storied addresses in American whiskey, the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky, where eight generations of the Beam family have made whiskey since Jacob Beam sold his first barrel in 1795. You can taste Basil Hayden at the barrel, pair it with a chef’s table, and walk away with a bottle that exists nowhere else in the world.

Two bookable paths await. The **Basil Hayden Culinary Tasting Experience** offers a food-forward, guided pairing, and the **Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting** delivers the full grain-to-glass story with Basil Hayden poured at the barrel fill. After several days and spots, I can say this was the best bourbon experience overall.nFelt super welcome from the moment we walked in the door.nThe pacing of samples was spot on.nThe offerings upstairs in the bar were some of the most reasonable prices I've seen. Really hard to find offerings were available to sample before purchasing.nThe tour of the grounds was very enjoyable and enlightening.nThe restaurant, The Table, had some fantastic eats (and drinks).nIf I ever hop on the bourbon trail again, this will definitely be one of the spots I will visit.

We finished with bottling our own bottle of Knob Creek 9, dipping our fingertips in the wax, & laser engraving the bottle in celebration of a 60th birthday. Definitely recommend a tour!

We had a bus pick us up from the store and drive us to one of the warehouses on the campus. The lady guiding us was so knowledgeable about the brand as well as the entire operation. We were in the actual warehouse and witnessed thousands of barrels stacked up on wooden scaffolding. The overwhelming smell of bourbon maturing in those barrels was unbelievable. And it was hot that day. We got to open one of the barrels and tasted the bourbon right out of it on the spot. What a great treat. When we got back to the store, we walked around the campus a bit, saw the Beam family original house. The Jim Beam store was a pretty cool place to visit. Lots of history and exhibits, plus the display of the bottles and the merchandise. I highly recommend going there for, at least, a half day to get the full experience, dine at the restaurant etc.

    - **ReviewBody:** We had a awesome time at Jim Beam and quite enjoyed our barrel thief tour where got to try bourbon direct from the source. Tons of stuff to do here and the grounds are quite pretty. One of the better distilleries to visit for sure.
