## How To Choose Bourbon Under $50

Four variables do most of the work when you pick a bourbon at this price ceiling.

**Proof.** [Proof indicates alcohol content, but it does not automatically tell you whether a bourbon will drink hot.](https://mashed.com/2194432/how-experts-pick-good-bourbon) Some high-proof bourbons stay balanced, while some lower-proof bottles can feel thin or sharp. That is why you should match proof to your purpose. For new drinkers, the [90–100 proof range offers enough flavor and structure without overwhelming the palate](https://mashed.com/2194432/how-experts-pick-good-bourbon). For cocktails, [bourbon in the 90–100 proof range (45–50% ABV) generally holds up better under sugar, bitters, and ice, and higher proof often works best for ice-heavy drinks like a Mint Julep](https://lochsofwhisky.com/blog/how-to-drink-bourbon-neat-rocks-water-or-cocktail).

**Mash Bill.** [Corn delivers sweetness and mouthfeel, rye brings peppery spice, and wheat smooths bourbon’s edges and supports a long finish.](https://mashed.com/2194432/how-experts-pick-good-bourbon) [High-rye bourbons (20–35% rye) taste bold and structured](https://telectronichub.com/food/american-spirit-bourbon). Wheated bourbons feel softer and more approachable. Traditional corn-forward mash bills sit between those styles. [James B. Beam Distilling Co. uses proprietary mash bills and a 65-foot legacy still known as the “Hardest Working Still in America.”](https://www.beamdistilling.com/about-us/beam-made-bourbon?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent)

It’s The Home of the World’s #1 Bourbon: Jim Beam.**

**Age Statements.** [Age matters in bourbon, but it does not tell the whole story.](https://mashed.com/2194432/how-experts-pick-good-bourbon) A younger bourbon can taste bright and lively. A very old bourbon can feel over-oaked. No age statement means the distiller blends barrels to a flavor target instead of a specific calendar age.

**Price vs. Quality.** [The $30–$50 tier is the most quality-dense price band in bourbon.](https://bourbonproof.com/gifts/best-bourbon-under-50) Spending more often buys a story or scarcity. For a deeper look at how to weigh these tradeoffs, see [How to Choose the Best Bourbon: A Step-by-Step Guide](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/how-to-choose-best-bourbon/?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent).

## Best Bourbon Under $50 for Sipping Neat

Balanced bourbons with moderate proof and refined flavor make the best neat pours under $50. [Smooth Bourbons for Sipping Neat: A Ranked Guide](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/best-smooth-bourbons-sipping-neat/?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent) explores this category in detail.

**Basil Hayden** leads this tier. At [80 proof](https://tastingtable.com/2251578/overpriced-bourbon-leave-on-shelves), it is the most approachable bottle in the Beam portfolio. It tastes [light, elegant, and easy drinking](https://tastingtable.com/2251578/overpriced-bourbon-leave-on-shelves), with a high-rye mash bill mentioned earlier that adds subtle structure without heat. It retails [around $45](https://tastingtable.com/2251578/overpriced-bourbon-leave-on-shelves) and is widely available nationwide.

**Jim Beam Black** is the everyday neat pour. At [86 proof](https://glassandnote.com/cocktails/best-bourbon-whiskey-brands-cocktails-recommendations) and seven years old, it delivers [caramel and nut notes](https://glassandnote.com/cocktails/best-bourbon-whiskey-brands-cocktails-recommendations) at a hard-to-beat price. [Wheated and lower-proof bourbons are ideal for beginners and neat sipping](https://mashed.com/2194432/how-experts-pick-good-bourbon), yet Jim Beam Black’s corn-forward profile reaches similar softness through age instead of grain substitution. [James B. Beam Distilling Co. uses the same yeast strain the family has used since the early 1930s, which Jim Beam personally safeguarded, and that consistency shows in every glass.](https://www.beamdistilling.com/about-us/beam-made-bourbon?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent)

For a deeper exploration of single-barrel neat pours, see [Best Single Barrel Bourbon: Top Picks for Every Budget](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/best-single-barrel-bourbon/?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent). If you prefer more intensity, the next section highlights high-proof options that keep flavor concentrated without stretching your budget.

## Best High-Proof Bourbon on a Budget

High-proof bourbon delivers concentrated flavor and stands up well in cocktails or with a splash of water. [Barrel-proof and high-proof bourbons can be incredible, and they reward a slow, thoughtful approach.](https://mashed.com/2194432/how-experts-pick-good-bourbon)

**Knob Creek 9 Year** is the benchmark. At [100 proof and 9 years old](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35), it is [priced at approximately $35–$40 and often matches or beats Eagle Rare 10 Year and Russell’s Reserve 10 Year on proof while usually costing less than either.](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35) [James B. Beam Distilling Co.’s roughly 3.1 million barrels aging across about 100 warehouses provide the economies of scale that keep Knob Creek 9 Year affordable.](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35)

![James B. Beam Distilling Co. has over 3 million barrels aging across its warehouses.](https://cdn.aigrowthmarketer.co/1781203943355-6b46a19cd894.jpeg)**James B. Beam Distilling Co. has over 3 million barrels aging across its warehouses.**

**Old Grand-Dad 114** pushes further at [114 proof](https://gardenandgun.com/outstanding-bourbons-under-50) and [~$35](https://gardenandgun.com/outstanding-bourbons-under-50). [Its high-rye mash bill contributes a deep, nutty layer that complements caramel and brown sugar notes](https://gardenandgun.com/outstanding-bourbons-under-50), and [Artfully Bourbon named the Old Grand-Dad 114 Single Barrel 7 Year its Best Overall Whiskey in the $25–$50 range for 2026.](https://artfullybourbon.com/guides/bourbons-25-50-dollars) Both bourbons come from James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, KY, and both typically sit on the shelf when you arrive. [All Beam barrels are made from level-4 char American White Oak, following the same practice since Jacob Beam.](https://www.beamdistilling.com/about-us/beam-made-bourbon?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent)

## Best Bourbon Under $50 for Cocktails

Cocktail bourbons need enough proof to stay present against sugar, bitters, and ice. [High-rye or bottled-in-bond styles often shine in cocktails because they bring spice, oak, and enough strength to remain visible in a mixed drink.](https://lochsofwhisky.com/blog/best-bourbon-brands-a-complete-buyer-s-guide) For a full breakdown, see [Best Bourbon for Cocktails: Top Beam Picks for 2026](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/best-bourbon-for-cocktails/?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent).

**Jim Beam White** (80 proof, [typically $15.99–$19.99 for a standard 750ml bottle](https://eduedge.blog/jim-beam-white-label-price-guide)) is the workhorse. It is widely available, consistent, and priced low enough to use freely in batched drinks. For drinks where the bourbon needs to carry the flavor, **Knob Creek 9 Year** ([100 proof, $30–$40](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35)) steps up for an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. For high-dilution drinks such as Kentucky Mules, [Jim Beam Black is the recommended choice.](https://glassandnote.com/cocktails/best-bourbon-whiskey-brands-cocktails-recommendations) [In every case, proof is a major buying signal, because higher-proof bourbon generally offers more intensity and holds up better when mixed.](https://forbes.com/sites/joemicallef/2026/05/26/worlds-best-sub50-bourbon-according-to-the-top-spirit-competitions)

## Best Bourbon Under $40 for Everyday Value

The under-$40 tier often gets overlooked in bourbon roundups, yet it is where the Beam portfolio stands out. [Best Bourbon for Beginners: Smooth Picks to Start With](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/best-bourbon-for-beginners/?utm_term=best-bourbon-under-50-dollars&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent) covers this range in depth.

**Jim Beam Black** ($22–$28, 86 proof, 8 years) delivers one of the clearest values in American whiskey at this price. **Old Grand-Dad Bonded** ([~$40, 100 proof, 7 years](https://artfullybourbon.com/guides/bourbons-25-50-dollars)) adds bottled-in-bond credentials, and [bottled-in-bond serves as a reliable quality baseline because it carries specific legal requirements: one distilling season, one distiller, one distillery, at least four years old, and bottled at 100 proof.](https://mashed.com/2194432/how-experts-pick-good-bourbon) **Wild Turkey 101** ([~$28, 101 proof](https://crushbrew.com/bourbon-buying-guide-2026)) and **Old Grand-Dad 114** ([~$35, 114 proof](https://gardenandgun.com/outstanding-bourbons-under-50)) round out the tier with high-proof character at prices that still leave room for a second bottle. [The biggest mistake bourbon drinkers can make is confusing scarcity with quality, so focus on the whiskey rather than the hype.](https://tastingtable.com/2251578/overpriced-bourbon-leave-on-shelves) But even the best value only matters if you can actually find the bottle, which makes availability worth its own reality check.

## Availability Reality Check

Availability often causes the most frustration, yet many bourbon guides skip it. In 2026, [everyday premium bourbons such as Knob Creek, Wild Turkey 101, and Four Roses expressions are widely available, and some markets even see price softening.](https://crushbrew.com/bourbon-buying-guide-2026) By contrast, [allocated bourbon is rationed by distributors, creating a two-tier pricing world of MSRP at retail and often multiples of that on the secondary market.](https://pourpicks.app/articles/what-is-allocated-bourbon)

The Beam portfolio of Jim Beam Black, Knob Creek, Basil Hayden, and Old Grand-Dad is non-allocated and nationally distributed, so you can expect to see it on shelves. For hard-to-find and distillery-exclusive bottles, the American Outpost gift shop at James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont keeps rare liquids on the shelf and generally available until they are gone, with no lottery or timed drops.

## If You Can Stretch Your Budget

Stretching slightly above the $50 ceiling unlocks a few standout upgrades. Among the best bourbon under $60 options, [Knob Creek 12 Year at approximately $55](https://crushbrew.com/bourbon-buying-guide-2026) offers a genuine age-statement step up from the 9 Year at the same distillery.

For rye lovers, the best rye bourbon under $50 is [Rittenhouse Rye at approximately $28](https://crushbrew.com/bourbon-buying-guide-2026), [a bottled-in-bond rye at 100 proof](https://thirstybear.com/best-bourbon-whiskey-under-100) that holds up in any cocktail. Old Overholt, also part of the Beam family, offers another widely available rye at a similar price. ## Conclusion

Beam Distilling Co. portfolio covers every occasion: Jim Beam Black for the everyday neat pour, Knob Creek 9 Year for bold sipping and serious cocktails, Basil Hayden for approachable elegance, and Old Grand-Dad for high-proof value. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What Is the Best Bourbon Under $50 for Someone New to Bourbon?

For a first-time bourbon drinker, approachability matters most. You want enough flavor to stay interesting and enough smoothness to enjoy without ice or a mixer. Basil Hayden, produced by James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky, is a clear answer at around $45. Its 80-proof bottling and high-rye mash bill mentioned earlier create a lighter, elegant profile that will not overwhelm a new palate.

Jim Beam Black is the next step. At 86 proof and seven years old, it offers more depth at a value price and stands out as one of the strongest introductions to aged bourbon on the shelf. Both bourbons are nationally distributed and easy to find. If you want to taste them in context, poured by the people who make them at the distillery where they are produced, the Beam Made Bourbon Tour in Clermont includes both as part of a grain-to-glass tasting experience.

### Is Knob Creek 9 Year Really Worth $35–$40 When Other 9-Year Bourbons Cost More?

Knob Creek 9 Year ranks among the most objectively well-priced bourbons in the under-$50 segment. At [100 proof with a confirmed 9-year age statement, restored in 2020 after a period without one](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35), it [matches or beats Eagle Rare 10 Year and Russell’s Reserve 10 Year on proof while typically costing less than either.](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35)

It has earned [Gold Outstanding at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Spirits Challenge](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35). The price stability reflects scale, because the distillery’s massive production footprint mentioned earlier keeps a 9-year-old, 100-proof bourbon in the mid-$30s. [Booker Noe, Jim Beam’s grandson, created Knob Creek in 1992 as part of the original Small Batch Bourbon Collection](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/how-is-knob-creek-9-still-only-35), and it still defines what a great everyday high-proof bourbon should cost.

### Which Bourbons Under $50 Are Actually Available on the Shelf, and Which Are Hard to Find?

In 2026, availability has improved for most everyday premium bourbons. The James B. Beam Distilling Co. portfolio of Jim Beam Black, Knob Creek 9 Year, Basil Hayden, Old Grand-Dad Bonded, and Old Grand-Dad 114 is non-allocated and nationally distributed, so you will see it at most well-stocked liquor retailers. Wild Turkey 101 and Four Roses Small Batch share similar availability.

[The bottles that remain genuinely difficult to find at MSRP are largely those tied to allocated lineups and certain Heaven Hill limited releases, though some mid-tier allocated releases have normalized toward retail pricing in 2026](https://pourpicks.app/articles/what-is-allocated-bourbon). These often require retailer relationships, state lotteries, or secondary market premiums. If you want access to hard-to-find and distillery-exclusive Beam expressions without those hurdles, the American Outpost gift shop at James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont keeps rare bottles on the shelf and available until they are gone, with no timed drops or lottery.

### What Is the Difference Between a High-Rye and a Wheated Bourbon, and Which Should I Buy?

The secondary grain in a bourbon’s mash bill, after the required majority of corn, shapes much of its character. [High-rye bourbons (typically 20–35% rye) are bold, spicy, and structured, with notes of pepper, clove, and dried fruit.](https://telectronichub.com/food/american-spirit-bourbon) Knob Creek and Old Grand-Dad are both high-rye expressions from James B. **FAQPage:**

  **MainEntity:**

    **Question:**

    - **Name:** What Is the Best Bourbon Under $50 for Someone New to Bourbon?
      **Answer:**

      - **Text:** For a first-time bourbon drinker, approachability matters most. You want enough flavor to stay interesting and enough smoothness to enjoy without ice or a mixer. Basil Hayden, produced by James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky, is a clear answer at around $45. Its 80-proof bottling and high-rye mash bill mentioned earlier create a lighter, elegant profile that will not overwhelm a new palate.nnJim Beam Black is the next step.
    **Question:**

    - **Name:** Is Knob Creek 9 Year Really Worth $35–$40 When Other 9-Year Bourbons Cost More?
      **Answer:**

      - **Text:** Knob Creek 9 Year ranks among the most objectively well-priced bourbons in the under-$50 segment. At 100 proof with a confirmed 9-year age statement, restored in 2020 after a period without one, it matches or beats Eagle Rare 10 Year and Russell’s Reserve 10 Year on proof while typically costing less than either.nnIt has earned Gold Outstanding at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Spirits Challenge. The price stability reflects scale, because the distillery’s massive production footprint mentioned earlier keeps a 9-year-old, 100-proof bourbon in the mid-$30s. Booker Noe, Jim Beam’s grandson, created Knob Creek in 1992 as part of the original Small Batch Bourbon Collection, and it still defines what a great everyday high-proof bourbon should cost.
    **Question:**

    - **Name:** Which Bourbons Under $50 Are Actually Available on the Shelf, and Which Are Hard to Find?
      **Answer:**

      - **Text:** In 2026, availability has improved for most everyday premium bourbons. Wild Turkey 101 and Four Roses Small Batch share similar availability.nnThe bottles that remain genuinely difficult to find at MSRP are largely those tied to allocated lineups and certain Heaven Hill limited releases, though some mid-tier allocated releases have normalized toward retail pricing in 2026.
    **Question:**

    - **Name:** What Is the Difference Between a High-Rye and a Wheated Bourbon, and Which Should I Buy?
      **Answer:**

      - **Text:** The secondary grain in a bourbon’s mash bill, after the required majority of corn, shapes much of its character. High-rye bourbons (typically 20–35% rye) are bold, spicy, and structured, with notes of pepper, clove, and dried fruit. Knob Creek and Old Grand-Dad are both high-rye expressions from James B. Beam Distilling Co., and both deliver that assertive, complex profile under $50.nnWheated bourbons replace rye with wheat, producing a softer, rounder, sweeter result, where vanilla, caramel, and honey tend to dominate with less spice and a gentler finish. Basil Hayden uses a high-rye mash bill and is bottled at a lower proof of 80, which softens the spice considerably and makes it one of the most approachable bottles in the Beam portfolio.nnIf you prefer sweeter, smoother flavors, start with Basil Hayden or Jim Beam Black. If you want spice and structure, reach for Knob Creek or Old Grand-Dad 114.

After several days and spots, I can say this was the best bourbon experience overall.nFelt super welcome from the moment we walked in the door.nThe pacing of samples was spot on.nThe offerings upstairs in the bar were some of the most reasonable prices I've seen. Really hard to find offerings were available to sample before purchasing.nThe tour of the grounds was very enjoyable and enlightening.nThe restaurant, The Table, had some fantastic eats (and drinks).nIf I ever hop on the bourbon trail again, this will definitely be one of the spots I will visit.

We finished with bottling our own bottle of Knob Creek 9, dipping our fingertips in the wax, & laser engraving the bottle in celebration of a 60th birthday. Definitely recommend a tour!

We had a bus pick us up from the store and drive us to one of the warehouses on the campus. The lady guiding us was so knowledgeable about the brand as well as the entire operation. We were in the actual warehouse and witnessed thousands of barrels stacked up on wooden scaffolding. The overwhelming smell of bourbon maturing in those barrels was unbelievable. And it was hot that day. We got to open one of the barrels and tasted the bourbon right out of it on the spot. What a great treat. When we got back to the store, we walked around the campus a bit, saw the Beam family original house. The Jim Beam store was a pretty cool place to visit. Lots of history and exhibits, plus the display of the bottles and the merchandise. I highly recommend going there for, at least, a half day to get the full experience, dine at the restaurant etc.
