## Key Takeaways for Planning Your Bardstown Bourbon Trip

- Bourbon tourism in Kentucky draws 2.7 million visits annually, and most travelers can only fit two or three distilleries into a weekend, so strategic choices matter.
- “Like Jim Beam” in this guide means five clear criteria: large-scale working production, deep family heritage since 1795, hands-on moments like barrel filling and bottling, taste-as-you-go tastings, and walk-up access to rare bottles.
- Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience in Bardstown is the closest match to Jim Beam among nearby options, with similar scale, heritage, and a hands-on “You Do Bourbon” bottling experience.
- Other strong Bardstown-area stops such as Willett, Bardstown Bourbon Company, Maker’s Mark, and Preservation Distillery deliver contrast experiences that complement the Beam model.
- James B. Beam Distilling Co. works best as the anchor for any Bardstown distillery day, and the Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting sets the benchmark experience for this comparison.

## What Makes a Distillery “Like Jim Beam” Near Bardstown

“Like Jim Beam” in this context describes a specific type of visit, not just a general vibe. The James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky, home of Jim Beam, the world’s #1 bourbon, serves as the benchmark for every distillery in this guide. Five criteria define that benchmark:

![An aerial view of James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky. It's The Home of the World's #1 Bourbon: Jim Beam.](https://cdn.aigrowthmarketer.co/1781203830436-7d752fb1bf89.jpeg)**An aerial view of James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky. It’s The Home of the World’s #1 Bourbon: Jim Beam.**

- **Scale:** A large, working distillery with visible production, including active mashing, fermentation, and distillation.
- **Heritage Depth:** The James B. Beam Distilling Co. has made bourbon since Jacob Beam sold his first barrel in 1795, with eight unbroken generations of one family shaping the whiskey.
- **Hands-On Tour Format:** Guests fill a barrel, dump a barrel, and bottle their own Knob Creek on the T-Line, pressing a thumbprint into the wax seal for a personal keepsake.
- **Taste-As-You-Go Format:** Five bourbons are tasted at the moments that explain them, so each pour connects directly to a step in the process.
- **Bottle Access:** Hard-to-find and distillery-exclusive bottles sit on the shelf for walk-up purchase while supplies last.

This clear framework separates this guide from a generic Bardstown roundup. Each distillery below is evaluated against these five criteria so you can decide which stops earn a place on a tight itinerary.

## Best Distilleries Like Jim Beam Near Bardstown

The distilleries below are the strongest options near Bardstown for travelers who already plan to visit the James B. Beam Distilling Co. as their anchor stop. Drive times are from Bardstown city center unless noted.

1. **Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience — Bardstown (0–5 Minutes From Downtown Bardstown)**Heaven Hill is the closest match to Jim Beam among distilleries in Bardstown proper. [The largest family-owned bourbon producer in America, Heaven Hill makes more than 40 brands](https://custombourbontours.com/best-distillery-tours-in-kentucky-custom-bourbon-tours), and its [Bourbon Heritage Center combines museum exhibits with production and bottling access](https://custombourbontours.com/best-distillery-tours-in-kentucky-custom-bourbon-tours). That scale shows up in the “You Do Bourbon” bottling experience, the closest parallel to Beam’s T-Line, where guests fill, cork, and label their own bottle in a simulated bottling setup. [Heaven Hill does not require advance reservations](https://partybuslouisville.net/blog/rent-a-bus-to-the-kentucky-bourbon-trail), so it works as a flexible add-on. On the benchmark, it scores high on scale and heritage, offers solid hands-on access, and its gift shop carries [allocated expressions like the Old Fitzgerald Bottled-in-Bond Decanter in walk-up stock](https://chasingtheunicornpodcast.com/awib/beam-suntory-clermont-distillery-production-restart-2026-07-27). The tasting format feels more condensed than Beam’s taste-as-you-go structure.
2. **Willett Distillery — Bardstown (Approximately 8 Minutes From Heaven Hill)**[Willett is a family-owned distillery on a hill at the edge of Bardstown, known for pot-still distillation and its signature curved-bottle design](https://bourbontowntours.com/private-bourbon-tours-bardstown). The tour feels smaller and more intimate than Beam’s large-campus experience. [Tours depart on the hour Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and require advance reservations up to 90 days out](https://partybuslouisville.net/blog/rent-a-bus-to-the-kentucky-bourbon-trail). On the benchmark, Willett intentionally contrasts with Jim Beam through smaller scale and a craft-focused production philosophy. Its allocated bottle availability and family ownership still make it a strong choice for enthusiasts who want variety instead of repeating the same style of stop.
3. **Bardstown Bourbon Company — Bardstown (Approximately 5 Minutes From Heaven Hill)**[Bardstown Bourbon Company opened in 2016 and built its reputation on collaborative distilling](https://custombourbontours.com/best-distillery-tours-in-kentucky-custom-bourbon-tours), with [floor-to-ceiling glass that lets visitors watch mashing, fermentation, and distillation in real time](https://custombourbontours.com/best-distillery-tours-in-kentucky-custom-bourbon-tours). [The Core Four tour runs $24 per person for one hour, and the Beyond the Barrel experience is $60 for 90 minutes](https://partybuslouisville.net/blog/rent-a-bus-to-the-kentucky-bourbon-trail). The on-site Kitchen and Bar ranks among the most polished lunch options in Bardstown. On the benchmark, it offers modern production at scale, strong food integration, and blending classes that add a hands-on element. Heritage depth and the tasting format differ from the Beam model, so this works as a contrast stop rather than a direct parallel.
4. **Maker’s Mark — Loretto (Roughly 30–40 Minutes From Bardstown)**[Maker’s Mark in Loretto is a designated arboretum styled as a 19th-century Victorian village where every bottle is still hand-dipped into red wax](https://imglobal.com/case-studies/the-ultimate-bourbon-trail-travel-guide--expert-advice-for-a-spirited-kentucky-adventure). [Visitors can dip their own bottle to take home](https://bourbontowntours.com/private-bourbon-tours-bardstown), which offers the most direct hands-on parallel to Beam’s T-Line bottling experience. Maker’s Mark belongs to the same family of brands as Jim Beam, so it feels like a natural and friendly second stop. The drive from Bardstown adds meaningful time to the day, and [most itinerary guides recommend treating Maker’s Mark as a half-day anchor rather than a quick add-on](https://12x75.com/kentucky-bourbon-trail). [Every guided experience requires an advance reservation](https://custombourbontours.com/best-distillery-tours-in-kentucky-custom-bourbon-tours). On the benchmark, it shines on hands-on access and scenic setting, while heritage depth and scale feel different from Beam’s working-industrial character.
5. **Preservation Distillery — Bardstown (Within the Bardstown Cluster)**[Preservation Distillery is a small-batch, craft-scale operation focused on historic mashbills, with a more intimate and production-focused tour](https://bourbontowntours.com/private-bourbon-tours-bardstown). Bourbon-serious visitors who want to understand pre-Prohibition distilling traditions often appreciate this deeper dive. On the benchmark, Preservation sits at the opposite end of the scale spectrum from Jim Beam, which makes it a useful “wildcard” slot on a three-stop itinerary rather than a direct match.

### Quick Benchmark Comparison

The table below scores each distillery against the five criteria from the opening section so you can quickly see where each stop aligns with the Beam model and where it offers contrast.

| **Maker’s Mark** | [National Historic Landmark on 1,100 acres of Star Hill Farm](https://imglobal.com/case-studies/the-ultimate-bourbon-trail-travel-guide--expert-advice-for-a-spirited-kentucky-adventure) | Iconic brand with National Historic Landmark designation | Hand-dip your own bottle in red wax | Distillery-exclusive bottles available, reservation required for tours |
| **Willett Distillery** | Smaller, family-owned pot-still distillery on a hill outside Bardstown | Family operation with a cult following among enthusiasts | Guided tours through active production with intimate group sizes | Allocated Willett bottlings periodically available in the gift shop |
| **Preservation Distillery** | Small-batch, craft-scale operation focused on historic mashbills | Emphasis on pre-Prohibition-style recipes and techniques | Close-up production tours with a focus on traditional methods | Limited-production releases sold on site while available |

## How to Plan a Bardstown Distillery Day From Jim Beam

The James B. Beam Distilling Co. sits at 568 Happy Hollow Rd., Clermont, KY 40110, just off I-65 between Louisville and Bardstown. [Louisville to Clermont is approximately 30 minutes, and Bardstown to Clermont is approximately 25 minutes](https://custombourbontours.com/kentucky-bourbon-trail-guide-maps-tours-planning). This geography makes Beam a natural first stop on a southbound Bardstown loop, since you pass it on the way to bourbon country and it is the first stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

The flagship Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting costs $30 plus tax and fees and [runs approximately 75 minutes for up to 24 guests](https://partybuslouisville.net/blog/rent-a-bus-to-the-kentucky-bourbon-trail). Five bourbons are tasted as you go: Jim Beam White at Jim Beam’s original Cadillac, Jim Beam Black at the mill, Basil Hayden while filling a barrel, Knob Creek at the barrel dump, and a rotating “surprise and delight.” Guests can bottle their own Knob Creek on the T-Line for $59.99, which matches the gift shop price, and engraving costs $10. After the tour, The Kitchen Table restaurant turns the visit into a full day out, including its signature sourdough pizza made with the same yeast strain used in the bourbon.

![On the Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting, you can participate in barrel filling and dumping,](https://cdn.aigrowthmarketer.co/1781204036498-f8c16384bf07.jpeg)**On the Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting, you can participate in barrel filling and dumping,**

A practical two-day itinerary for the Bardstown cluster looks like this.

**Day 1 — Anchor at Beam, Then Head to Heaven Hill**

- Morning: Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont (75 minutes; book in advance)
- Lunch: The Kitchen Table on the Beam campus
- Afternoon: Drive approximately 25 minutes to Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience in Bardstown ([no reservation required; open Monday–Saturday 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 1–5 p.m.](https://partybuslouisville.net/blog/rent-a-bus-to-the-kentucky-bourbon-trail))

**Day 2 — Contrast Stops in Bardstown**

- Morning: Willett Distillery (tours on the hour, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.; book ahead)
- Midday: Bardstown Bourbon Company for lunch and a tour
- Optional afternoon extension: Maker’s Mark in Loretto (roughly 30–40 minutes from Bardstown) as a half-day anchor

A simple rule for picking stops keeps the day enjoyable. [Three distilleries per day feels comfortable, and four fills the day](https://12x75.com/kentucky-bourbon-trail). A reliable formula is one large heritage anchor (Beam), one contrast stop (Willett or Bardstown Bourbon Company), and one wildcard (Preservation or Lux Row) so tours stay distinct in your memory.

**Responsible Transportation and Safety**

[Rural Kentucky has thin rideshare coverage between distilleries, and Kentucky State Police actively patrol key routes for DUI enforcement](https://distilleriesnearme.us/guide/kentucky-bourbon-trail). Plan a designated driver, a rotating non-drinking driver, or a licensed tour operator for any multi-stop itinerary. All tasting experiences at the James B. After several days and spots, I can say this was the best bourbon experience overall.nFelt super welcome from the moment we walked in the door.nThe pacing of samples was spot on.nThe offerings upstairs in the bar were some of the most reasonable prices I've seen. Really hard to find offerings were available to sample before purchasing.nThe tour of the grounds was very enjoyable and enlightening.nThe restaurant, The Table, had some fantastic eats (and drinks).nIf I ever hop on the bourbon trail again, this will definitely be one of the spots I will visit.

We had a bus pick us up from the store and drive us to one of the warehouses on the campus. The lady guiding us was so knowledgeable about the brand as well as the entire operation. We were in the actual warehouse and witnessed thousands of barrels stacked up on wooden scaffolding. The overwhelming smell of bourbon maturing in those barrels was unbelievable. And it was hot that day. We got to open one of the barrels and tasted the bourbon right out of it on the spot. What a great treat. When we got back to the store, we walked around the campus a bit, saw the Beam family original house. The Jim Beam store was a pretty cool place to visit. Lots of history and exhibits, plus the display of the bottles and the merchandise. I highly recommend going there for, at least, a half day to get the full experience, dine at the restaurant etc.

    - **ReviewBody:** We had a awesome time at Jim Beam and quite enjoyed our barrel thief tour where got to try bourbon direct from the source. Tons of stuff to do here and the grounds are quite pretty. One of the better distilleries to visit for sure.
