## Distilleries Between Louisville And Lexington On The Bourbon Trail

The corridor splits into two highway legs. The [official Kentucky Bourbon Trail](https://kybourbontrail.com) [organizes its directory into six tourism regions](https://kentuckytourism.com/things-to-do/bourbon/kentucky-bourbon-trail) — Northern, Louisville, Central, Lexington, Bardstown, and Western — not by highway corridor, so the trail’s directory does not show this drive in order. The table below maps each leg to its distilleries in driving order from Louisville.

| Leg | Distilleries (Louisville Outbound Order) |
| --- | --- |
| I-65 / Bluegrass Parkway | James B. Beam Distilling Co. (Clermont), Heaven Hill (Bardstown), Lux Row (Bardstown), Wild Turkey (Lawrenceburg), Four Roses (Lawrenceburg) |
| I-64 | Whiskey Thief (Frankfort), Castle & Key (Frankfort area), Woodford Reserve (Versailles), Bluegrass Distillers at Elkwood Farm (Midway), Pinhook (Midway), Jeptha Creed (Shelbyville) |

Use the table to plan your drive in order: start with the I-65 leg out of Louisville, then decide whether to continue to Lexington via Lawrenceburg or swing north to the I-64 corridor.

## The I-65 And Bluegrass Parkway Leg: Clermont, Bardstown, Lawrenceburg

**James B. Beam Distilling Co. — Clermont, ~30 minutes south of Louisville.** James B. Beam Distilling Co. sits at 568 Happy Hollow Rd., right off I-65. That location makes it the natural first stop on this leg and the anchor of any Louisville-to-Lexington itinerary. The flagship Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting runs 75 minutes, costs $30, and caps at 24 guests. Five bourbons are tasted as you move through the working distillery, grain to glass, instead of in a rushed flight at the end. You fill a barrel, dump a barrel, and can bottle your own Knob Creek on the T-Line, sealing it with a thumbprint pressed into wax ($59.99, engraving $10). This is the home of Jim Beam, the world’s #1 bourbon, and the entire Small Batch Collection: Knob Creek, Basil Hayden, Booker’s, and Baker’s. The distillery holds a [4.7-star rating across more than 1,400 reviews](https://www.google.com/maps/place/James+B.+Beam+Distilling+Co./@37.931145,-85.6549989,17z/data=!4m10!1m2!2m1!1sbeam+distillery+google!3m6!1s0x886901aff214fe0f:0x6344565b40dec517!8m2!3d37.931145!4d-85.652424!15sChZiZWFtIGRpc3RpbGxlcnkgZ29vZ2xlIgOIAQGSAQpkaXN0aWxsZXJ54AEA!16s%2Fg%2F11rrzll3q?entry=ttu), and 7th-generation master distiller Fred Noe and 8th-generation Freddie Noe are on site nearly every day. Book in advance, since weekend slots sell out, especially during Derby and football seasons.

It’s The Home of the World’s #1 Bourbon: Jim Beam.**

**Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience — Bardstown, ~45 minutes from Louisville.** [Heaven Hill sits on Gilkey Run Road on the edge of Bardstown](https://bestroadtrip.com/kentucky-road-trips). [Independent trail guides describe it as a modern, tasting-led visit of 1.5–2 hours](https://12x75.com/kentucky-bourbon-trail) and one of the strongest tasting experiences on the trail. Booking is required. Bardstown also hosts Lux Row Distillers, a smaller-scale stop that pairs well with Heaven Hill on the same afternoon.

**Wild Turkey and Four Roses — Lawrenceburg, ~55 minutes from Louisville, ~20 minutes from Frankfort.** [These two sit near each other outside Lawrenceburg](https://12x75.com/kentucky-bourbon-trail) and are frequently paired, since both run classic guided tours of about 1.5 hours and both recommend reservations. [Four Roses is particularly well regarded among enthusiasts for its ten distinct recipes](https://12x75.com/kentucky-bourbon-trail). [Wild Turkey offers public tours Monday through Saturday](https://lifeisfortravel.com/usa/kentucky/bourbon-trail). Lawrenceburg’s position, roughly halfway between Bardstown and Frankfort, makes it a natural bridge between the two legs if you are doing a two-day itinerary.

## The I-64 Leg: Frankfort, Versailles, Midway, Shelbyville

**Woodford Reserve — Versailles, ~55 minutes from Louisville via I-64.** [Woodford Reserve Distillery, a National Historic Landmark at 7785 McCracken Pike in Versailles, Kentucky, sits on a site where distilling began in 1812](https://www.whiskeylore.org/interviews/woodford-reserve-master-distiller-chris-morris-bourbon-history), with water naturally filtered by limestone deposits under the property and whiskey made using copper pot stills in a triple distillation process. [Reservations are required](https://woodfordreserve.com/tour/privatetours), and [it books out fast on weekends](https://12x75.com/kentucky-bourbon-trail). It is a strong stop for first-timers drawn to the photogenic setting.

**Frankfort And Midway Stops.** **Whiskey Thief — Frankfort.** A smaller Frankfort stop [at 283 Crab Orchard Rd.](https://tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductReview-g39604-d28634959-Kentucky_Bourbon_Experience_3_Iconic_Distilleries_Tastings-Louisville_Kentucky.html), Whiskey Thief is commonly included in guided multi-stop tours of the Frankfort corridor. Continuing east, **Bluegrass Distillers at Elkwood Farm — Midway.** [A rural, farm-based stop](https://tripadvisor.com/AttractionProductReview-g39604-d28634959-Kentucky_Bourbon_Experience_3_Iconic_Distilleries_Tastings-Louisville_Kentucky.html) sits between Frankfort and Lexington. **Pinhook — Midway.** This is a tasting-focused stop in the same Midway cluster.

**Jeptha Creed — Shelbyville.** [Jeptha Creed Distillery is located at 500 Gordon Lane in Shelbyville, Kentucky (40065), east of Louisville off I-64](https://jepthacreed.com/contact/). It is a family-owned craft distillery and a practical stop for travelers based in Louisville heading toward Lexington.

## Choosing A Home Base: Lexington Or Louisville

The corridor is drivable from either city. Louisville puts you closer to the I-65 leg, with Clermont 30 minutes south and Bardstown about 45 minutes away, so it works well for travelers prioritizing James B. Beam Distilling Co. and the Bardstown cluster. Lexington puts you closer to the I-64 leg. [Woodford Reserve in Versailles is roughly 10 miles west, typically a 15–20 minute drive](https://www.woodfordreserve.com/plan-a-visit/), and Frankfort is about 30–40 minutes farther. For a full breakdown of which city works better as a home base, see the [Louisville vs. Lexington: Best Bourbon Trail Home Base](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/lexington-vs-louisville-bourbon-trail/?utm_term=distilleries-louisville-lexington-bourbon-trail&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent) guide.

## Best One-Day Itinerary Between Louisville And Lexington

This one-day sequence follows the I-65 leg from Louisville toward Lexington.

1. **9:00 a.m. — James B. Beam Distilling Co., Clermont** (~30 minutes from Louisville). Book the 9:30 a.m. Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting. Allow 75 minutes for the tour plus time in the American Outpost gift shop and a stop at The Kitchen Table for lunch. Plan to depart by 12:30 p.m.
2. **1:30 p.m. — Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience, Bardstown** ([about 16 miles from Clermont, roughly a 30-minute drive northwest on KY 245](https://explorebardstown.com/day-trips/clermont-bernheim-and-jim-beam/)). Expect a 1.5–2 hour tasting-led visit. Aim to depart by 3:30 p.m.
3. **4:30 p.m. — Four Roses or Wild Turkey, Lawrenceburg** (~20 minutes from Bardstown). Plan for a classic 1.5-hour guided tour. From Lawrenceburg, [Lexington is roughly 25–35 minutes away by car (about 27 miles), with the drive typically routed via Versailles Road and Lexington Road](https://www.mapsof.net/distance/lawrenceburg-to-lexington), a natural end point for the day.

For a two-day itinerary, split the legs with an overnight. Day one covers the I-65 leg: Beam in Clermont, Heaven Hill in Bardstown, and Wild Turkey or Four Roses in Lawrenceburg, with an overnight in Bardstown or Lawrenceburg. Day two covers the I-64 leg: Woodford Reserve in Versailles, then Frankfort-area stops, finishing in Lexington. For a deeper look at the Louisville-to-Frankfort portion of this route, see [Best Bourbon Distilleries Between Louisville and Frankfort](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/best-bourbon-distilleries-louisville-frankfort/?utm_term=distilleries-louisville-lexington-bourbon-trail&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent).

[Reserve your 75-minute Beam Made Bourbon Tour](https://www.beamdistilling.com/james-b-beam-distillery-tour/book-a-tour?utm_term=distilleries-louisville-lexington-bourbon-trail&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent#id=beam-made-bourbon-distillery-tour-tasting-clermont)

## Booking Reality: How Far Ahead To Reserve

[The Kentucky Bourbon Trail® notes that tours and tastings at its distilleries can sell out 30, 60, or even 90 days in advance, with booking windows often running 6–12 weeks and guests reserving on average about 22 days ahead](https://kybourbon.com/industry-news/kentucky-bourbon-trail-visitation-holds-strong-at-2-7-million-hosted-in-2025/), so 30–90 days is a prudent target for marquee stops. [Weekends and the spring-to-autumn peak season book out earliest](https://travel.yahoo.com/advice/travel-tips/articles/why-kentucky-bourbon-trail-rewards-195444599.html). [Gift shops and grounds can generally be visited without a reservation, but guided tours and tastings sell out and should be booked in advance](https://kybourbontrail.com/travel-blogger-tips-for-your-kentucky-bourbon-trail-distillery-visits).

Those windows matter most for Beam’s flagship tour, which is $30 and books online at beamdistilling.com. Popular weekend slots, particularly during Derby season and SEC football weekends in September and October, sell out. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your tour time. Tours depart promptly and late arrivals cannot join a tour in progress.

[Woodford Reserve private experiences require booking 90 days to six months in advance](https://woodfordreserve.com/tour/privatetours). Heaven Hill and the Lawrenceburg stops require advance booking and do not reliably accommodate walk-ins for tours. For a broader look at regional routes and drive times, see the [Kentucky Bourbon Trail Map: Regions, Routes, And Drive Times](https://www.beamdistilling.com/articles/kentucky-bourbon-trail-regions-routes/?utm_term=distilleries-louisville-lexington-bourbon-trail&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent) guide.

After several days and spots, I can say this was the best bourbon experience overall.nFelt super welcome from the moment we walked in the door.nThe pacing of samples was spot on.nThe offerings upstairs in the bar were some of the most reasonable prices I've seen. Really hard to find offerings were available to sample before purchasing.nThe tour of the grounds was very enjoyable and enlightening.nThe restaurant, The Table, had some fantastic eats (and drinks).nIf I ever hop on the bourbon trail again, this will definitely be one of the spots I will visit.

We finished with bottling our own bottle of Knob Creek 9, dipping our fingertips in the wax, & laser engraving the bottle in celebration of a 60th birthday. Definitely recommend a tour!

We had a bus pick us up from the store and drive us to one of the warehouses on the campus. The lady guiding us was so knowledgeable about the brand as well as the entire operation. We were in the actual warehouse and witnessed thousands of barrels stacked up on wooden scaffolding. The overwhelming smell of bourbon maturing in those barrels was unbelievable. And it was hot that day. We got to open one of the barrels and tasted the bourbon right out of it on the spot. What a great treat. When we got back to the store, we walked around the campus a bit, saw the Beam family original house. The Jim Beam store was a pretty cool place to visit. Lots of history and exhibits, plus the display of the bottles and the merchandise. I highly recommend going there for, at least, a half day to get the full experience, dine at the restaurant etc.
