## Key Takeaways

- Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve is a 120-proof, nine-year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey drawn from a single barrel, with concentrated flavor and depth.
- Each bottle reflects Beam’s low-rye mash bill, proprietary yeast, and Kentucky climate aging, creating rich caramel, vanilla, oak, and baking spice notes.
- The Single Barrel Reserve differs from the standard Small Batch through higher proof, a guaranteed age statement, and a more wood-driven profile at a competitive premium price.
- Barrel variation is intentional, so both store picks and standard releases offer distinct tasting experiences that reward side-by-side comparison.
- [**Reserve your spot on the Beam Made Bourbon Tour to taste Knob Creek at the source.**](https://www.beamdistilling.com/james-b-beam-distillery-tour/book-a-tour?utm_term=knob-creek-single-barrel-bourbon&utm_campaign=ai_growth_agent#id=beam-made-bourbon-distillery-tour-tasting-clermont)

## How Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Is Made

Knob Creek was [created in 1992 by Booker Noe as part of Jim Beam’s Small Batch Bourbon Collection](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/the-best-value-single-barrel-bourbons-to-try-in-2026), alongside Booker’s, Baker’s, and Basil Hayden’s. That choice to release a bourbon with a real age statement and substantial proof reshaped what American drinkers expected from premium whiskey. More than three decades later, the Single Barrel Reserve carries that same philosophy forward in its most concentrated form.

Every drop begins with Kentucky water, which contributes to bourbon flavor, appearance, and fermentation. That water becomes the base for cooking and fermenting the grain with the same proprietary yeast strain the Beam family has relied on for generations.

From there, the distillate runs through the still and flows into charred American White Oak barrels. Those barrels then age for a minimum of nine years across Beam’s warehouses in Clermont, where Kentucky’s four-season climate, with cold winters and hot summers, pushes the bourbon deep into and back out of the wood. That cycle builds the dense, layered character that defines this expression.

## Nose, Palate, and Finish Breakdown

At 120 proof, Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve rewards a slow approach. A few minutes in the glass allow the aromas and flavors to open fully.

**Nose:**

- Rich caramel and brown sugar
- Vanilla bean and toasted oak
- Dried fruit and a hint of leather
- Warm baking spice, including cinnamon and clove

**Palate:**

- [Dense caramel, powdered sugar, vanilla, nuts, smoky oak, and baking spice](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/the-best-value-single-barrel-bourbons-to-try-in-2026)
- [Roasted peanuts and mature, wood-driven char](https://rootedintheglen.com/blogs/bourbon-whiskey-cigar-articles/best-high-proof-american-whiskeys-under-100)
- Full-bodied texture with a warmth that builds gradually, often called the “Kentucky Hug”

**Finish:**

- Long and warming, with lingering oak and vanilla
- [Drinks more smoothly than expected for a 120-proof bourbon](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/the-best-value-single-barrel-bourbons-to-try-in-2026)
- Spice fades slowly, leaving caramel and toasted wood

## Single Barrel vs. Small Batch: How They Compare

Knob Creek’s standard Small Batch expression and the Single Barrel Reserve share the same core ingredients and production approach. Both rely on Kentucky water, the proprietary yeast, and charred oak barrels that define the brand’s house style. The differences come from proof, age, and the fact that one is blended while the other comes from a single cask.

The Small Batch is blended from a select group of barrels to create a consistent, approachable profile at a lower proof. The Single Barrel Reserve is drawn from one barrel, bottled at a fixed 120 proof, and carries a guaranteed nine-year age statement. The result is a bourbon that is [darker and more wood-driven](https://rootedintheglen.com/blogs/bourbon-whiskey-cigar-articles/best-high-proof-american-whiskeys-under-100), with greater flavor intensity and a longer finish.

On price, Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve sits in the competitive range for premium bourbon. Within the broader 120-proof single-barrel category, that position offers strong value for a nine-year single barrel from one of America’s most storied distilling families. As one deputy editor at The Whiskey Wash put it, [“You’re getting genuine age, genuine proof, and a bottle that earns the price.”](https://thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-articles/the-best-value-single-barrel-bourbons-to-try-in-2026)

## Store Picks and Barrel Variation Explained

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve comes from individual barrels, so [flavor, color, and proof can vary from barrel to barrel because warehouse position and aging conditions affect each cask differently](https://newriffdistilling.com/single-barrel-bourbon-vs-small-batch-vs-standard-bottle). A bottle from a high-floor warehouse rick will taste different from one that aged on a lower floor closer to the ground. That variation is intentional and gives each barrel its own personality.

Retailer-selected barrels, often called “store picks,” follow the same production process as the standard release, so the quality baseline stays the same. What changes is the specific barrel’s character. [Store picks can offer additional age or unusual flavor characteristics while remaining close to the standard bottle’s price](https://rootedintheglen.com/blogs/bourbon-whiskey-cigar-articles/best-high-proof-american-whiskeys-under-100) because a retailer has added one more layer of curation by tasting and selecting that barrel directly. Both the standard and store-pick expressions are bottled at 120 proof with a nine-year age statement, so the difference lies in the barrel, not the production standards.

The most direct way to understand barrel variation is to taste it at the source. At the James B. Beam Distilling Co., the Beam Made Bourbon Tour includes a Knob Creek pour at the barrel dump, the moment in the tour designed to show exactly what nine years in charred oak barrels produces.

## Where to Buy Knob Creek Single Barrel, On-Site and Beyond

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve appears on shelves at most well-stocked liquor retailers across the United States. [Prices vary by state, store, and season, so shelf price should be treated as a guide rather than a fixed number](https://12x75.com/best-bourbons).

For travelers visiting Kentucky, the American Outpost gift shop at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont serves as the flagship retail stop. Unlike many distilleries that release allocated bottles through timed drops or lotteries, Beam keeps hard-to-find and distillery-exclusive bottles on the shelf and generally available until they are gone, so guests avoid the usual scramble. The shop also carries distillery-only expressions not available anywhere else, including Lineage, the Distiller’s Share experimental series, and a throwback bottled-in-bond version of Basil Hayden made exclusively for the distillery.

Guests on the Beam Made Bourbon Tour can also bottle their own Knob Creek on the T-Line by rinsing the bottle, running it down the line, and pressing a thumbprint into the wax seal. That bottle is $59.99, the same as the shelf price, with optional engraving for $10.

## Food Pairings for High-Proof Knob Creek

At 120 proof, Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve pairs naturally with bold, flavorful dishes. The Kitchen Table at the James B. Beam Distilling Co., a full-service restaurant and cocktail bar serving Kentucky-inspired classics, offers an ideal setting to explore these combinations.

![The Kitchen Table's signature dish is a sourdough pizza made with the same yeast strain used in the bourbon, baked in a proper Italian pizza oven.](https://cdn.aigrowthmarketer.co/1781204256341-9f02873a00be.jpeg)**The Kitchen Table’s signature dish is a sourdough pizza made with the same yeast strain used in the bourbon, baked in a proper Italian pizza oven.**

- **Smoked or barbecued meats:** The bourbon’s oak and char notes mirror the smoke in slow-cooked brisket or pulled pork, while its caramel sweetness cuts through the fat.
- **Aged cheddar or sharp cheese:** The fat in aged cheese softens the proof and draws out the vanilla and nut notes on the palate.
- **Dark chocolate:** Bittersweet chocolate amplifies the baking spice and caramel while providing a counterpoint to the oak-driven finish.
- **Sourdough bread:** The Kitchen Table’s signature sourdough pizza, made with the same yeast strain used in the bourbon, connects the grain character of the whiskey to the fermented tang of the bread.
- **Pecan pie or butter toffee:** Classic Kentucky desserts echo the bourbon’s roasted nut and caramel profile without competing with it.

These pairings work anywhere, yet enjoying them alongside the bourbon at its birthplace adds context that a retail bottle alone cannot provide.

## Experience Knob Creek at the Beam Made Bourbon Tour

Tasting Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve at the distillery where it is made gives the fullest picture of the whiskey. The Beam Made Bourbon Tour is a 75-minute, grain-to-glass experience that moves through the working distillery in stages, from limestone water and grains to fermentation, the still, and barrel filling and dumping. Guests taste five bourbons at the points in the process that explain them, and Knob Creek is poured at the barrel dump so the barrel’s influence is clear.

Beyond the pour, guests fill a real barrel, dump a real barrel, and can bottle their own Knob Creek on the T-Line with a thumbprint wax seal. The tour costs $30 plus tax and fees, accommodates up to 24 guests, and active military attend free with valid ID.

![On the Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting, you can participate in barrel filling and dumping,](https://cdn.aigrowthmarketer.co/1781204036498-f8c16384bf07.jpeg)**On the Beam Made Bourbon Tour & Tasting, you can participate in barrel filling and dumping,**

For returning enthusiasts who want to go deeper, the Maturation Matters warehouse experience takes guests inside one of Clermont’s oldest rackhouses to thief whiskey straight from a barrel of Jim Beam Black at barrel strength. That hands-on tasting shows how warehouse position and time shape flavor. The Private Barrel Selection program offers the chance to select your own Knob Creek barrel, a popular option for groups, retailers, and serious collectors.

Master distillers Fred Noe, seventh generation, and Freddie Noe, eighth generation, are on site nearly every day. Fred personally hosts Whiskey Wednesday tastings, and both often sign bottles in the gift shop. That level of family access reflects what eight generations of one family in one place truly look like.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve and Knob Creek Small Batch?

Knob Creek Small Batch is produced by blending a select group of barrels to achieve a consistent flavor profile across every bottle. Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve is drawn from one individual barrel, bottled at a fixed 120 proof, and carries a guaranteed nine-year age statement. Because no two barrels age identically, each Single Barrel bottle has its own distinct character. The Single Barrel Reserve is higher in proof, older, and more intensely flavored than the Small Batch expression, and it is priced accordingly in the premium category.

### Is Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve worth the price?

For a nine-year, 120-proof single barrel bourbon from one of America’s oldest continuously operating distilling families, its retail price is competitive within the premium bourbon category. The expression delivers genuine age, substantial proof, and a flavor profile of dense caramel, roasted nuts, baking spice, and mature oak that stands up well against allocated and harder-to-find bottles at higher prices. Whether you are buying at retail or picking one up at the American Outpost gift shop at the James B. Beam Distilling Co., the value is clear: you receive a lot of bourbon for the price.

### What is a store pick, and is it better than the standard Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve?

A store pick, also called a private selection or retailer selection, is a barrel of Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve that a retailer tasted and selected directly from the distillery’s warehouse inventory. Both versions share the same proof and age specifications, so the difference comes from the individual barrel. A store pick can offer additional age or an unusual flavor profile, but “better” depends entirely on personal preference. Some drinkers prefer the standard release for its approachable consistency, while others seek out store picks for the chance to find a barrel with a distinctive character. The most reliable way to form an opinion is to taste both, and the Beam Made Bourbon Tour at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. is an ideal place to begin that comparison.

### Can I buy Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. distillery?

Yes. The American Outpost gift shop at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky carries Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve alongside a range of hard-to-find and distillery-exclusive expressions. Unlike many distilleries that release allocated bottles through timed drops or lotteries, Beam keeps bottles on the shelf and generally available until they are gone. Guests on the Beam Made Bourbon Tour can also bottle their own Knob Creek on the T-Line for $59.99, with optional personalized engraving for $10. The distillery is located at 568 Happy Hollow Rd., Clermont, KY 40110, about 30 minutes south of Louisville, right off I-65.

## Plan Your Visit

We had a bus pick us up from the store and drive us to one of the warehouses on the campus. The lady guiding us was so knowledgeable about the brand as well as the entire operation. We were in the actual warehouse and witnessed thousands of barrels stacked up on wooden scaffolding. The overwhelming smell of bourbon maturing in those barrels was unbelievable. And it was hot that day. We got to open one of the barrels and tasted the bourbon right out of it on the spot. What a great treat. When we got back to the store, we walked around the campus a bit, saw the Beam family original house. The Jim Beam store was a pretty cool place to visit. Lots of history and exhibits, plus the display of the bottles and the merchandise. I highly recommend going there for, at least, a half day to get the full experience, dine at the restaurant etc.
