## Key Takeaways

- A private barrel selection lets you taste multiple barrels, choose a favorite, and bottle an exclusive bourbon with your name on it.
- Distillery experiences typically range from $100–$150 per person, while full barrel purchases usually fall between $7,000 and $15,000.
- James B. Beam Distilling Co. stands out for most visitors, with hands-on selection in historic Warehouse K and Knob Creek at cask strength just 30 minutes from Louisville.
- Retail store picks provide a more accessible alternative, though they do not include the hands-on, educational elements of a distillery visit.

## What A Private Barrel Selection Includes

A private barrel selection goes well beyond buying a bottle off a shelf. The process typically involves a guided tasting of multiple barrel candidates, a group decision, custom bottling, and personalized labeling. The result is a release available only to the people in that room on that day.

Before you book, keep a few details in mind. Tastings usually involve 3–5 barrel candidates, each with distinct flavor, proof, and character shaped by its position in the rickhouse and time in wood. Group sizes vary by distillery, from intimate parties of up to six at Angel’s Envy to larger groups of eight or more at Louisville Rickhouse. A single barrel yields roughly [150–250 bottles](https://distillerytrail.com/directory-distillery/listing/louisville-rickhouse-whiskey-co), all drawn from one cask with no blending. Custom labels commemorate the occasion with names, dates, logos, or personal messages, and many couples and groups keep the barrel head as a keepsake.

On pricing, distillery experiences can start around $100–$150 per person. [Old Forester’s Barrel Pick Experience runs $100+ per person for 90 minutes](https://discover-louisville.com/guides/bourbon/best-bourbon-distilleries-louisville). Full barrel purchases typically range from about $7,000 to over $15,000 depending on the distillery, age, and proof. [Kentucky Artisan Distillery offers smaller 15-gallon barrels from $3,785](https://northwestbeerguide.com/spirits/2026-kentuckyartisan-15amps25), which works well for smaller groups or tighter budgets.

A [2022 Kentucky law allows anyone to schedule a barrel pick directly through Kentucky distilleries](https://gardenandgun.com/wedding-bourbon-barrels), eliminating the need for a third-party retailer. This change opened these programs to the general public and encouraged distilleries like James B. Beam Distilling Co., Angel’s Envy, Augusta Distillery, New Riff Distilling, and Log Still Distillery to expand their offerings.

If you are ready to book your own selection, the distilleries below offer the strongest programs near Louisville, each with its own character, setting, and requirements.

[James B. Beam Distilling Co. opened its Private Barrel Selection program in late 2025](https://gardenandgun.com/wedding-bourbon-barrels), giving groups the chance to select their own barrel of Knob Creek bourbon bottled at cask strength. Picks take place in historic Warehouse K, where Hall of Fame master distiller Booker Noe once walked. Many visitors follow the selection with drinks and a meal at The Kitchen Table restaurant on the distillery grounds.

[Alex Bowie, director of home-place experiences at James B. Beam Distilling Co.](https://gardenandgun.com/wedding-bourbon-barrels), describes the experience this way: [“It’s like getting to be a master distiller for the day. What sets Beam apart is the depth of the setting. As the home of the First Family of Bourbon, with eight generations making whiskey since Jacob Beam sold his first barrel in 1795, the distillery carries a legacy you can feel in its historic warehouses. That legacy is backed by scale, with roughly 3.1 million barrels aging across its warehouses. Guests who add the flagship Beam Made Bourbon Tour ($30 per person, 75 minutes) can also bottle their own Knob Creek on the T-Line. They seal it with a thumbprint pressed into the wax, creating a unique souvenir available to every visitor, whether or not they buy a full barrel.

Guests taste directly from barrels and help select a single barrel. The experience is available to groups by reservation through oldforester.com, and weekends often book out two or more weeks in advance.

## Retail Store Picks: A More Accessible Alternative

Retail stores offer “store picks,” which are single barrels selected by the store, bottled under their own label, and sold exclusively at that retail account. [The store buys an entire barrel, typically $8,000 to over $15,000](https://whiskeypulse.com/news/world-whiskies/american/how-a-nj-retailer-is-reshaping-bourbon-barrel-picks-6a6e5840f658ce7ec165274b), tastes samples from multiple barrels, selects one, and bottles it. Customers can buy a bottle but do not participate in the selection process.

Store picks are more accessible than distillery experiences because they require no booking and have no group minimum, and they are often priced just $10–$15 above the standard release. The tradeoff is the absence of any hands-on, educational element. [Once a barrel is gone, that exact whiskey is gone forever](https://chasingtheunicornpodcast.com/awib/store-pick-bourbon-what-single-barrel-2026-06-21), and the batch and barrel code on the label serve as the only production record for that specific cask.

Top Louisville stores for store picks include:

- **Evergreen Liquors** (NuLu), with rotating, highly rated picks from Peerless, Russell’s Reserve, and more
- **Westport Whiskey & Wine**, with [an established reputation for above-average barrel selection](https://chasingtheunicornpodcast.com/awib/store-pick-bourbon-what-single-barrel-2026-06-21)
- **Justin’s House of Bourbon**, with [a single Louisville location at 101 West Market Street](https://www.thehouseofbourbon.com/about), plus its flagship Lexington store, offering private selections and tastings

If you are planning for a larger group or a special occasion, buying an entire barrel directly from a distillery offers a more immersive route. The outline below shows what that process usually involves.

## Full Barrel Purchase For Groups: What To Expect

Many distilleries, including James B. Beam Distilling Co., allow groups to purchase an entire barrel for corporate events, wedding parties, or bourbon clubs. The process usually follows a consistent structure across programs:

- Guided tasting of several barrel candidates, typically three to five
- Group selection of the winning barrel
- Bottling with custom labels, with 150–250 bottles per barrel
- Barrel head often included as a keepsake

Beam’s program stands out because of the family legacy and the opportunity to select Knob Creek in historic Warehouse K, the same boards Booker Noe walked for decades. General pricing for full barrels ranges from about $7,000 to over $15,000. [Bardstown Bourbon Company’s VIP experience is valued at $12,000–$16,000.](https://thebourbonflight.com/kentucky-science-center-is-raffling-a-vip-experience-at-bardstown-bourbon-company) [Kentucky Artisan Distillery offers smaller 15-gallon barrels from $3,785](https://northwestbeerguide.com/spirits/2026-kentuckyartisan-15amps25) for those who want a lower commitment.

[Distilleries recommend reaching out at least two months in advance, with bottling and labeling taking six weeks or longer after selection.](https://gardenandgun.com/wedding-bourbon-barrels) Plan your calendar around that full timeline.

We had a bus pick us up from the store and drive us to one of the warehouses on the campus. The lady guiding us was so knowledgeable about the brand as well as the entire operation. We were in the actual warehouse and witnessed thousands of barrels stacked up on wooden scaffolding. The overwhelming smell of bourbon maturing in those barrels was unbelievable. And it was hot that day. We got to open one of the barrels and tasted the bourbon right out of it on the spot. What a great treat. When we got back to the store, we walked around the campus a bit, saw the Beam family original house. The Jim Beam store was a pretty cool place to visit. Lots of history and exhibits, plus the display of the bottles and the merchandise. I highly recommend going there for, at least, a half day to get the full experience, dine at the restaurant etc.
